Project manager in ship simulation

is sought to the Faculty of Technology and Seafaring, Aboa Mare in Turku 

for the period 1.3.2021 - 31.1.2022 or by agreement.

We are looking for a capable project manager for the project "Sea4Value / Fairway" (S4VF), which focuses on developing and testing future fairway navigation services, including remote pilotage. The project, which started on 1 February 2020, is one of the research programs under the Finnish maritime ecosystem One Sea ( The project receives its main funding from Business Finland. Dimecc Ltd coordinates the project, and the project consortium consists of a number of marine industry companies, universities and other maritime stakeholders. Novia's role is mainly to test remote piloting processes and technology at the simulators.

The duties of the Project Manager include:

  • coordinate the project's development and research activities and take care of collaboration with the other project partners;
  • organize and implement necessary studies and tests in the simulator;
  • together with Novia's simulator team, evaluate simulator development needs to complete the necessary simulator tests;
  • participate in the other tasks of the project and coordinate the necessary resources to perform these tasks;
  • handle the project's communication;
  • be responsible for the whole project and its budget, administration and reporting.

We are looking for you who:

  • has a suitable university degree in shipping, ICT or engineering;
  • works independently, but has a good ability to work in a project team and follow guidelines and plans;
  • is results-oriented, and good to coordinate; and
  • has good written and oral language skills of English as well as Swedish and/or Finnish.

We would also like you to have research and project experience and experience in ICT or marine technology. Experience in shipping and simulations is seen as a merit.

Salary according to “collective agreement of the private educational field” and internal directives. 

The position includes a probationary period of five months.

Aboa Mare offers degree and continuing education for the maritime industry. The maritime education and training centre in Turku was founded in 1813. Aboa Mare offers secondary education at Axxell vocational institute, where you can study for a Watchkeeping Officer’s or Watchkeeping Engineer’s degree, and Bachelor level education at Novia UAS, where you can study for a Sea Captain’s or Marine Engineer’s degree. Aboa Mare also offers Master level education, Master’s degree programme in Maritime Management and Master’s degree programme in Autonomous Maritime Operation. In addition, Aboa Mare offers continuing education for both professional seafarers and boaters. The training centre provides safe and environmentally sustainable training, which fulfils the requirements laid down in the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). The education and training on offer makes use of the simulators developed by Aboa Mare. Our simulation department consists of 10 ship bridge simulators, one engine control room simulator, one VTS-simulator, one DP-simulator and one GMDSS simulator. The first-rate simulators are also used for different R&D projects within the maritime industry.
