Ice Navigation Training

For ice navigation training Aboa Mare is definitely your number one partner, our knowledge in ice navigation courses both in theory and in ice navigation simulation will prove this. The Aboa Mare STCW Polar Code courses’ content is a result from good co-operation with the Finnish maritime cluster. With our top-notch instructor’s having experience from ice going cargo vessels and icebreakers both in Baltic Area and in Arctic, using the best ice navigation simulators, the learning outcome from our ice navigation training will be one of the best in the world.

Basic and advanced ice navigation training

The IMO International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code) entered into force on January 1st, 2017. The Polar Code addresses ship design, construction and equipment, operational and training concerns, search and rescue and the protection of the unique environment of the polar regions (imo.org). The IMO Polar Code will be STCW mandatory as of 1 July 2018.

Aboa Mare provides a diversified training portfolio in ice navigation training, including Basic and Advanced training according to the Polar Code, as well as training for Baltic ice conditions. Shiphandling in ice, ice management training and specialized ice training according to the needs of the customer. A good example of this is our co-operation with ABB Marine Academy in top level ice navigation courses for Azipod propulsion and arctic know-how.

It is important for us to offer our customers the best possible training and an optimal training environment. This is why we keep developing the tools for simulator training. Our most recent project is the Arctic Simulator Training Program (ASTP), which is developing a next-generation simulator for ice navigation courses in arctic conditions and other challenges. The objective of the project is that the simulator can provide high-quality training for ship handling, ice navigation training, icebreaker operations and escort towing. The simulator utilizes decades of ice data collected by Aker Arctic. Development work is carried out in cooperation with professionals of seafaring, ice, training, simulation and mathematical modelling.

Aboa Mare is also providing ice navigation courses according to the Polar Code abroad at Giga Mare in Subic Bay, Philippines and at GMC Maritime Training Center in Piraeus, Greece. The ice navigation training abroad is conducted with instructors from Aboa Mare.
